Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Based on the famous video-game series Halo and created by the Eisner-winning team of writer Brian Michael Bendis (Powers) and artist Alex Maleev (Daredevil), this book shows the Covenant invasion of Earth from the perspective of civilians on the ground. Ruwan, a hotel concierge in the beautiful resort city of Cleveland, Ohio—my, how the future changes things—flees the conquering aliens and teams up with Myras Tyla, a musician determined not to be a sitting duck. Instead of simply killing everyone, the Covenant aliens are ransacking the city for the mysterious Key of Osanalan, which they heard about from their captive, Colonel Akerson. Of course, it doesn't exist, but only his brother, Ruwan, knows that. What follows is a genuinely heroic and touching tale. What it isn't is a story about Master Chief John 117, the protagonist of the Halo series and the star of the book's cover. The unbeatable armored super-soldier does appear, but his beautifully drawn and choreographed space-battles have very little to do with the plot. Still, much like its hit predecessor, Halo Graphic Novel, this should appeal to Halo lovers everywhere. Maleev's planetscapes are memorably luminous, and Bendis's dialogue is wry and effective. From The Critics
The first graphic adaptation of the wildly popular Halo video-game series—a collection of short stories misleadingly titled The Halo Graphic Novel (2006)—topped best-sellers charts. Uprising brings us into the Halo narrative between the second and third games of the series, when the alien coalition called the Covenant is attacking Earth. While cyborg super-soldier Master Chief is fighting his way through Covenant troops off-world, Cleveland concierge Ruwan is just hiding under his desk. Then gutsy singer Myras comes in asking for guns—concierges know how to find everything, right? The pair teams up to escape the attacks and eventually connects with UN Space Command troops. The Covenant leader has been demanding a mysterious object, and it turns out that Ruwan actually knows what it is. VERDICT Master Chief's minimal role may disappoint hard-core Halo gamers, but casual fans and especially nongamers will be pulled into experiencing an alien invasion vicariously through "ordinary people" Ruwan and Myras, who share heroics and love. A compelling read with dark, grimy art that renders the aliens impressive but always ugly. Older teens and up.—M.C.

    THE NEXT SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant wait till it comes out, you see I played Halo 1 then 2 and wondered what happened before they came back to Earth. So when I was wanting to know I started looking for some books about Halo but couldn't find any until I walked into Barns and Noble then I found it. Once I started reading it I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN, I MEAN IT WAS NONSTOP ACTION AND THINGS HAPPENED YOU WOULDN'T THINK WOULD HAPPEN. The first Halo book I read was Halo First Strike and well after that I continued to buy the Halo books. Each book is more surprising than the last too me. Which means to me this will be even better than the last, and for all those Halo game fanatics out there you will find out what the Master Chief looks like and who his family so called family is.

    The Bridge is Built

The Halo Universe is a never ending expasion of the games. The Mini-Series Uprising is a perfect example of the expansion of the games, building a gap between the ending of Halo 2 to the beginning of Halo 3. I believe, 100%, that this series will please the most die hard Halo fan as all other Halo subjects have!

    more from this reviewer

    Well...

I am a huge fan of the Halo series, I have played every installment, and own almost every book, currently I own all of them except for the graphic novels prompting me to put this on my christmas list, so here I am owning the book, I have finished it, and well I am sad to say I am a bit dissapointed. First off the art is average, its not great, its not poor either, its just on par one could say, despite this every once in a while I would come across a one or two page ''Splash'' panel that I would find somewhat cool, but aside from that the art is overall quite unremarkable.
Sure it would be cool to have these panels framed as lithographs but a couple good panels, dosnt make average art great. Now the story on the other hand is quite below average, it is split between the narratives of The Master Chief, a hotel concierge called Ruwan and his popstar friend.
Now the Ruwan/Popstar storyline I am sorry to say is unbelievable boring,
mutiple times while reading I would get actually slightly interested by the exploits of the Chief, only to turn the page and find the book back to the boring Ruwan. Personally if Brian had wanted to make a good comic, he should have just had Alex draw page after page of The Chief blowing the crap out of covenant eye candy, with light dialogue. Now sure this might have not been the most sophisticated way to tell a story, but it would have been much better than the stupid Ruwan storyline, that makes the Chief storyline feel as if it were tacked on as an afterthought, something which should be the other way around. Now despite all this if you enjoy the halo universe you will probably enjoy this book just dont come expecting much, and you will be satisfied - CM

Not the best they came out with

Well honestly I was very excited to buy this book at the very frist day so I did. wow was I disapointed how the whole story line just turned out to be and what makes it worst it has nothing to do with the chief or any other spartan. waist of time if you ask me.

    Terrible!

I am a die hard halo fan but this story has nothing 2 do with the halo timeline. Besides the gap between part 1 & 2 of the game. And the chief is barely in the story. Its mostly about a really flamboyant guy and some slutty celebrity. So ill just come out and say it this book sucks! Its a waste of time and money. And if you like halo it doesnt do the franchise justice. The art isn't really good and the story kind of sucks.

IT was a good read, for us Halo Buffs

The plot is not something you look for expectantly from literature related to video games. They did do a better than average job on that front in this series. What really counts is the art, and the details especially of the Covenant forces. Everything looks bad ass. I personally did enjoy the rendering of future contemporary cities. I always try to look for that in sci fi lit. and see if it's something that would stand up to "reality", or if it came out of George Lucas' communal Hukkka.
