School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3 Instead of gardening with his Aunt Nell as he always has, Hamilton decides to spend his summer becoming a great artist. Following a do-it-yourself manual, Hamilton completes his paintings and arranges for an outdoor exhibit of his works. Meanwhile, Aunt Nell tends the vegetables and flowers alone. When the day of the art show arrives, the newspaper photographer is more impressed with the plants than the paintings. Hamilton is dejected until Aunt Nell comes up with a happy solution. The book's gentle humor is reinforced by the pen-and-ink drawings highlighted with washes of pink and blue. Hamilton may be conceited, but readers will love this young animal as much as his Aunt Nell does and rejoice in the positive ending. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, Minn.
