Act Four, Scene 5|Partial Text
CLAUDIUS Her brother is in secret come from France,
Feeds on his wonder, keeps himself in clouds,
And wants not buzzers to infect his ear
With pestilent speeches of his father's death,
Within necessity, of matter beggared,
Will nothing stick our person to arraign
In ear and ear. O, my dear Gertrude, this,
Like a murdering piece, in many places
Gives me superfluous death.
--Contemporary Translation (on the facing page in the book)
CLAUDIUS: Her brother has returned secretly from France,
Is astonished at what has happened, keeps himself aloof,
And does not lack for rumor mongers to infect his mind
With poisonous accounts of his father's death.
In this respect, with few facts to go on,
They will not stop at accusing us
In every ear. O, my dear Gertrude, this
Is like a cannon firing scattershot, killing
Me over and over again.
