Thompson's study of Dashiell Hammett's novels initially was serialized in The Armchair Detectivefrom 1973 to 1975 and is well known among Hammett heads. Almost impossible to find decades later, the piece here appears in its entirety, along with an intro by Hammett biographer William F. Nolan. Thompson provides a general overview of Hammett's work, dedicating a chapter apiece to his five novels. Hammett continues to thrill and fascinate mystery readers andwriters, and Thompson's work offers deep insight into his novels.
