Read an Excerpt

From the author's trail journals, p. 53: Avoiding Bears--Icy Strait, Alaska July 7, 1989

"I continue to see bear signs on every beach along the shore; no safe place to camp. Therefore, tonight I am on a small rocky island in Icy Strait; I hope this is far from normal bear habitat. There are no flat spots of my tent, so my hammock is strung low between several large rocks. The kayak is hauled out on the rocks above high tide. Strong headwinds and angry waves stopped me early today. Am spending the afternoon lying in my hammock, watching the waters of Icy Strait and the glacier-capped mountains in the distance. Orcas (killer whales), seals, eagles, and kittiwakes keep me entertained. I hear Humpbacks but cannot see them. No bears disturb my camp.
