Overview

The second volume in Fania's Hammock House series was helmed by Joe Claussell, just like the first (Hammock House: Africa Caribe). Where volume one featured a 72-minute Claussell mix of Afro-Caribbean salsa plus a bonus disc of Claussell-meets-Fania remixes, Hammock House: Eastbound L expands the menu, presenting a few mixes from Claussell plus a roster of like-minded compatriots from around the world. "Little" Louie Vega, no stranger to salsa, gets the honor of remixing his uncle Héctor Lavoe's "Mi Gente" (this mix is actually from 2007). He gives way to more intriguing re-versions, including one by Italian Nicola Conte, who's a natural to reimagine Roberto Roena's version of the Dave Brubeck standard "Take Five." Brazil's Bonde do Rolê freestyle right over their contribution, and Aaron Jerome's remix of the funky Latin soul nugget "I Like It Like That" (originally by Pete Rodriguez) is surprisingly subtle, only gradually and gracefully working some post-production into the original.
