Description: This is the sixth edition of a book dating back 30 years dedicated to diagnosing and treating patients of advanced age. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate clinicians on aspects of diagnosing and treating patients of advanced age, with a focus on the particular changes and approaches that should be taken into consideration with this population. This is an extraordinary endeavor and the authors and contributors have presented an equally extraordinary book.
Audience: The primary audience is clinicians who treat geriatric patients, but this is a very valuable book for every medically-oriented professional who works with older patients as well as for families of patients who wish information about their aging loved ones. The authors and contributors are all experienced clinicians who work with the geriatric population.
Features: The book is available in print and web-based versions through the Expert Consult website. The web-based version is extremely easy to use, has the full text and graphics, with additional resources such as references. The book is divided into three sections — Principles and Practice, Geriatric Syndromes and Common Special Problems, and Selected Clinical Problems of the Organ Systems. Each section is divided into topics such as defining levels of care (hospital care, long term care, etc.) that discuss common considerations of each area. There are many subsections on specific diagnoses such as hearing impairment, visual impairment, persistent pain, frailty, oral disorders, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, etc. The many figures and tables are highly intuitive and the text is easy to read, thus making it a valuable resource for families. The differential diagnoses are presented in a very simple manner comparing and contrasting the differentials very well.
Assessment: This is one of the top books in geriatric medicine because of its usefulness to both clinicians and families.
