Overview

Now in paperback, this illustrated guide encourages beginners and experienced knitters to forget pattern conventions and to use different stitches to create shaping, pattern, and texture

Examining this traditional craft in a bold, refreshing way, to appeal to novices and experts alike, this book shows crafters how to explore the qualities of knitting in a new way. Each technique and idea is clearly explained in detail, so that beginners can follow easily and more experienced knitters can see the potential of this unique approach. The author also explores knitting as a means of creating a textile rather than simply making a flat pattern, and encourages experimentation with unusual materials, as well as the more conventional knitting yarn. The book includes advice on how to design garments, cushions, and throws, and projects for a range of fabulous sweaters, jackets, hats, and cushions.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A beautiful, idea-provoking book."  —Library Journal

"This is not just how-to but explanations of why the stitches work the way they do."  —Booklist

Library Journal
This is a beautiful, idea-provoking book that (ironically, given the subtitle) lacks direction and a clearly defined audience. The accomplished knitters who will most appreciate this book do not need the knitting technique information in the first chapter and will probably skip to the meat of the book in Chapter 3. Here Ellen works through exercises using texture, pattern, shaping, modular knitting, and multidirectional knitting that will inspire the thinking knitter to move in new directions. Given the steep price of this book, it is recommended only for large public library knitting collections where demand warrants. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
