Description: Although many clinicians want to dive into treatment in the first session with a patient, it is critically important to accurately assess and diagnose the problem and choose the best treatment for that diagnosis. This book provides essential information on the assessment process for specific disorders and how to use those results to inform treatment decisions.
Purpose: This second edition is aimed at updating the literature and providing an overview of this important topic with three new chapters.
Audience: The primary audience is clinical psychologists, but the book also would be of interest to providers in other behavioral health disciplines. The editors and contributing authors are well known in the field and have contributed to excellent scholarly work in the past.
Features: The book begins with a review of psychometrics, including the basics of validity and reliability, but it also covers additional important topics such as sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive power, etc. This is followed by a critical review of brief screening measures with precise consideration of strengths and weaknesses highlighted in the scientific literature. Structured and semistructured interviews follow, with careful probing of all aspects of the measure, including reliability, validity, time to administer, alternate forms, and any special issues that might contribute to advantages or disadvantages of using the measure. The bulk of the remainder of the book is devoted to measures designed to assess specific psychological disorders. These are presented in narrative form with the usual critical review, but also include summary tables. Information about where to obtain the tests is sometimes provided. Each chapter ends with a discussion of treatment options, including both psychological and pharmacological. In addition, guidelines are presented for referrals when appropriate (e.g., sleep studies in patients with insomnia). The references are cutting edge and the index is comprehensive.
Assessment: This should be required reading for all clinical psychologists. It is an invaluable resource summarizing the literature on a multitude of assessment measures and guiding clinicians towards appropriate test selection and treatment planning. The references have been substantially updated, making the second edition a worthwhile purchase.

Meet the Author

Martin M. Antony, PhD, ABPP, is Professor and Chair in the Department of Psychology at Ryerson University in Toronto, as well as Director of Research at the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Antony has published 28 books and 140 articles and book chapters in the areas of cognitive-behavioral therapy, obsessive–compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, perfectionism, and related topics. He has received career awards from the Society of Clinical Psychology (Division 12 of the American Psychological Association), the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. He is a Fellow of the American and Canadian Psychological Associations and past president of the Canadian Psychological Association.
David H. Barlow, PhD, ABPP, is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry and Founder and Director Emeritus of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Dr. Barlow has published over 500 articles and book chapters and over 60 books and clinical manuals—some translated in over 20 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, and Russian—primarily in the areas of emotional disorders and clinical research methodology. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including, most recently, the Career/Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. He is past president of the Society of Clinical Psychology and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and past editor of the journals Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice and Behavior Therapy.
