Description: This comprehensive book gathers a wealth of knowledge on biologically active peptides from a variety of research areas into a single reference. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: By bridging the knowledge gained from organisms such as bacteria, plants, and amphibians, to that obtained from studying mammalian physiological processes, this book elegantly accomplishes two important goals: providing a broad overview of the field and introducing investigators to research performed in seemingly unconnected areas.
Audience: The book is intended for peptide researchers in both basic and clinical settings, as well as biochemists, cell and molecular biologists, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, and endocrinologists. The volume is edited by Dr. Abba J. Kastin, a renowned peptide biologist and journal editor, and the contributors and section editors are noted experts.
Features: The book's imposing size may intimidate, but the detailed table of contents and index allow for quick identification of topics of interest. Each of the 21 sections covers a specific area of active peptide biology. Navigation through the book is straightforward, although it could be improved by demarcating individual sections. Sections I-VI cover plant, bacterial/antibiotic, fungal, invertebrate, amphibian/skin, and venom peptides; sections VII and VIII present cancer/anticancer and vaccine peptides; sections IX-XIX include immune/inflammatory, brain, endocrine, ingestive, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, opiate, neurotrophic and blood-brain barrier peptides; while sections XX and XXI discuss peptide biosynthesis/processing and general peptide topics. This edition has been updated to present recent advances in the field and edited to enforce uniformity in style. Therefore, each chapter begins with a short abstract and most chapters follow a basic format that outlines the discovery, cellular and molecular characteristics, biological functions, and pathophysiological implications of the peptide discussed. Since certain peptides are considered under multiple sections, browsing may be required to obtain complete coverage of a given topic. Black-and-white figures appear within chapters, while the corresponding color plates are provided at the end of the book.
Assessment: No other currently available book thoroughly covers such a wide array of areas related to peptide research in a single, all-encompassing volume. This should be regarded as an essential and invaluable reference for all with an interest in biologically active peptides, from novice researchers to accomplished scientists.

Meet the Author

Abba J. Kastin was born in Ohio and educated at Harvard College and Medical School. After starting his work on neuropeptides at NIH, he went to Louisiana where he now holds an endowed chair at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Dr. Kastin has been made an honorary member of 7 foreign medical societies, has received 2 honorary doctorates (1 American and 1 foreign), and has won several national and internaitonal awards. Author of more than 800 papers (25,000 citations), he has been listed among the 100 researchers most cited in the scientific literature.
