Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mary Lou Korpon, MS, RN, CPNP (Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing)
Description: This second edition handbook of child nutrition, first published in 1989, is a compact and simplified guide to basic nutrition questions.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a suitable guide for general practitioners without specialized nutrition knowledge. It is an introduction only and should not substitute for consultation with nutritionists. The authors' objectives are met throughout the book and, as such, it could be a valuable resource for many different people.
Audience: It is written for students, interested lay people, and general practitioners. Those with specialized nutrition knowledge would find it much too simplified. The authors' knowledge base in pediatric GI and nutrition more than qualifies them to write this book.
Features: The illustrations are adequate and placed throughout the book appropriately. The references are timely, but they are too limited to British sources. The cover of the book is eye-catching for those who are vested in children and amusing to anyone who has dealt with toddler feedings.
Assessment: The second edition is sufficiently expanded and includes impressive amounts of new material. The lay person, student, or general practitioner would find it useful. The British orientation, however, can be disconcerting with unfamiliar spelling and terminology.
From the Publisher
"The second edition is sufficiently expanded and includes impressive amounts of new material. The lay person, student, or general practitioner would find it useful."—Doody's Health Sciences Review

"Based on wide practical experience and combines sound knowledge of the subject with a common-sense approach and sensitivity to the needs of parents and children. It is clearly set out with a useful index, a bibliography and addresses of self-help groups. I would recommend this book to health visitors and medical students, community nurses and social workers."—Nursing Times (on the first edition)

"An excellent handbook, addressing the common concerns of parents regarding their child's nutrition... Will be of benefit to all health professionals who have to deal with nutritional problems in children. It is easy to read, provides good references and a list of relevant self help groups."—Maternal & Child Health
