From The CriticsReviewer: Valerie L. Ng, PhD MD(Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)
Description: This book contains all the information one could ever want regarding clinical laboratory findings during pregnancy.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the first ever laboratory medicine book on laboratory diagnosis of various maternal or fetal conditions during pregnancy. This information does not exist elsewhere in a convenient and concise form. The authors have succeeded well in their endeavor.
Audience: This book would appeal to anyone interested in the laboratory manifestations of pregnancy in the mother and fetus, including clinical laboratory scientists (CLS) in training or practice, medical students, residents and fellows in obstetrics and gynecology or laboratory medicine/pathology, and practicing physicians of any specialty who treat or test specimens from pregnant women.
Features: What a surprise for this naive reviewer — enough information about pregnancy and disease states, and laboratory related issues during pregnancy, to fill an entire 19 chapter, 441 page textbook! This book is a stunning tour de force of everything one could ever want to know about how pregnancy - with or without coexisting diseases - affects laboratory tests. The authors chosen to write each of the chapters are world renowned experts in each of their areas, and this expertise is readily apparent to the reader. Each chapter is authoritative, comprehensively yet concisely covers the topic under discussion, and finishes with extensive references (often >100 references per chapter). Imagine, a 50-page chapter dealing only with prenatal screening tests for fetal abnormalities and surrounding psychological or commercial issues! I was in awe of the sheer comprehensiveness of this book.
Assessment: This is a unique and valuable contribution to laboratory medicine, and the most comprehensive book around focusing on how pregnancy affects laboratory test values. Anyone treating and/or testing specimens from pregnant women and their fetuses should get this book.
