Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Jens Goebel, MD (Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center)
Description: This book provides a how-to approach to dialysis and related problems, an ever-expanding area of nephrology. This fourth edition handbook, which comes six years after its predecessor, is a companion to the more comprehensive textbook by the same authors, Clinical Dialysis, 4th edition, published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date information about all aspects of dialysis therapy in a ready-to-use format. Given the continuing growing complexity of the field, such information is much needed and appreciated.
Audience: While potentially useful as a resource for students and physicians in training as well as for dialysis staff, the book contains enough detailed information to serve as an educational reference and resource for dialysis providers and prescribers, i.e. nephrologists. The authors and the editors are international authorities and provide a broad and deep range of information.
Features: The book essentially is an "all-you-need-to-know-if you-have-to-provide-dialysis-therapy-to-anybody" resource. As such, it almost exceeds its stated intent to serve as a how-to complement to the textbook, because it is hard to imagine what important additional information is not covered in this handbook. Examples of the breadth and uniqueness of information covered in the handbook are a separate section on tidal peritoneal dialysis and an extensive segment covering pediatric aspects. The latter, while most appreciated, perhaps also carries a risk of overlap and duplication, as some of the aspects of pediatric care are not much different from matters affecting adults.
Assessment: This is a much needed, comprehensive update on all practical aspects of dialysis therapy. It will undoubtedly be a frequently used resource in many dialysis units and nephrology practices, as well serve as an educational tool for dialysis staff and nephrologists in training. While, theoretically a handbook intended for the coat pocket, making it fairly unique in the field, its actual size essentially forces it onto the shelf in the end.
