Editorial Reviews

Booknews
This three-volume set provides a useful compendium for researchers and clinicians to access up-to-date information on existing instruments for family-related measurements. The 976 abstracts represent the development of measurement within the field over the past 50-plus years. Volume 1 comprises a reprint of the original handbook published in 1990, covering nearly 1,000 assessment tools from the 1929 to 1986 literature, and Volume 2 continues from that point until 1996. Volume 3 includes selected examples of the actual instruments. The information has been organized into five areas, each with its own chapter that starts with an overview summarizing the intermingling of conceptual development and measurement concerns. Topics include dimensions of marital and family interaction, intimacy and family values, parenthood, roles and power, and adjustment. Each abstract contains the last names and initials of all authors, the full title of the instrument, a statement indicating variables measured, a description, at least one published reference in which its use is described, information regarding availability, and key words for indexing. The most recent and active examples receive more detailed treatment. Edited by Touliatos (human development, Texas Christian U.), Barry F. Perlmutter (clinical psychology, California School of Professional Psychology), and Murray A. Straus (sociology and family research, U. of New Hampshire). Annotation c.
