Overview

What do clinicians need to know to safely and effectively prescribe psychotropic medications to elderly patients?

Clinicians can now turn to this definitive handbook for answers. Here, three experienced pharmacologists offer a true “how to” guide to prescribing medications in the geriatric population, drawing on their own clinical experience and reading of the literature in geriatric psychopharmacology.

This concise handbook is replete with valuable advice (e.g., drug dosing, titration) for day-to-day clinical practice. Each chapter covers a major psychotropic class, detailing the pharmacology, clinical use, side effects, and treatment of selected syndromes and disorders, plus a unique quick-reference summary of prescribing data on selected drugs. Concluding chapters detail the treatment of substance-related disorders, movement disorders, and dementias and other cognitive syndromes in the elderly—in-depth discussions that are simply not available elsewhere.

Written for residents, fellows, and clinicians in psychiatry and medicine who diagnose and treat psychiatric and neuropsychiatric conditions that can affect geriatric patients, this clinical reference can be used across all treatment settings for the elderly (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, day hospital, consultation, and nursing homes). Geriatric and general psychiatrists, geriatric medical specialists, internists and family practitioners, medical students and residents, and case managers and social workers—all will come to rely on this handy guide for the critical information needed to provide optimal care for our fast-growing population of elderly patients.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Daniel Loiterstein, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: Geriatric psychiatry has evolved into a unique specialty. This handbook represents an excellent resource to reach for when questions about psychopharmacology arise. It bridges clinical advice with evidence based psychiatric medicine.
Purpose: The authors suggest the book is a clinically useful "how-to" to the prescribing of psychotropic medication in a geriatric population. Prior to this, a practical prescribing handbook such as this was unavailable. The authors meet their goals. A clinician with this book in his library would be well equipped to answer the majority of pharmacologic questions arising when treating a geriatric population.
Audience: A broad audience would benefit from this book. The authors identify residents, fellows, and attending physicians in either psychiatry or medicine who treat patients with psychiatric illnesses as the audience. This audience is a conservative estimate of the professionals who might find usefulness in this book. Other professionals such as nurses, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists who have interactions with this patient population would also benefit from the clear organized manner in which the information is presented. All three authors are credible academic physicians, recognized as leaders in the field of geriatric psychiatry.
Features: The book is divided into three main sections. The introductory chapter is a thorough review of concepts essential to a sound understanding of geriatric psychopharmacology. The next part of the book is dedicated to the individual medications. The second part addresses specific syndromes and how they are pharmacologically treated. Liberal use of charts and tables contribute to the practicality of the book. A comprehensive table of contents and extensive index make specific information easy to find. Each chapter ends with a bulleted summary of key points. In addition, each chapter has an extensive list of references for further review of the literature.
Assessment: This high quality handbook is a useful and unique tool for healthcare professionals treating geriatric patients with psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. It is unique in its practicality and complete in its breadth and depth of information.
