The fourth edition is updated to cover new treatments available since the third edition. This edition also discusses diseases or disorders resulting from bioterrorism.
Purpose: According to the foreword by Hedi Bedrarz, the handbook "serves as an effective and dependable tool" to be used in providing care to various clients. The objectives are worthy and the book is an excellent reference for beginning or advanced practitioners.
Audience: The handbook is written for practicing nurses and nursing students. There are several consultants and contributors from varied educational settings and academic preparations who share their expertise.
Features: Disease processes and procedures are presented in alphabetical order. Each topic (disease process) is defined and the cause, complications, assessment, diagnostic tests, treatment and nursing diagnosis and outcomes are presented. Nursing interventions and teaching are described for each disorder or disease process. The handbook is well written, clear and easy to read. Special icons highlight important information or pointers. Among the specific areas covered are: pediatrics, geriatrics, gender differences, nursing priorities, and health promotion.
Assessment: This is a well written, comprehensive, and organized handbook. A revision was necessary to cover diseases and disorders linked with bioterrorism, including anthrax, plague, and variola and the use of cardiac resynchronization therapy.
