Overview

Authored by the foremost authority on NANDA diagnoses, this best-selling handbook is a quick reference to nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems. The book is organized for speedy reference and uses a two-part format: Nursing Diagnoses and Diagnostic Clusters with a collaborative focus. This edition has been revised to incorporate the 2009/2011 NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses.

Every NANDA diagnosis includes listings of associated Nursing Interventions Classifications (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classifications (NOC). Other features include Author's Notes sections and icons highlighting considerations for special populations. A laminated card groups common diagnoses by functional health patterns.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Kerry H. Cheever
The sixth edition of this book identifies generic nursing interventions and outcome criteria based on the latest NANDA-approved list of nursing diagnoses. Nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems commonly associated with medical diagnoses are also included for cross-reference purposes. The purpose is to provide an easy, quick reference of current NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses, with guidelines for generic nursing interventions and outcome criteria. This should aid the practicing nurse in devising appropriate nursing care plans. This is a most useful handbook for nurses practicing in traditional and nontraditional settings as well as for student nurses. A user-friendly resource, its pocket-size and nice use of tables and typesetting features makes this book an easy reference to use within the clinical setting. This is an invaluable resource tool for nurses and student nurses. The succinct, generic guidelines for nursing outcome criteria and interventions based on nursing diagnoses should help to guide appropriate nursing care activities. Additionally, this text identifies those collaborative problems and nursing diagnoses typically associated with various common medical diseases and procedures. This edition nicely incorporates new 1994 NANDA-approved nursing diagnoses. This revised handbook is an appropriate addition to individual practitioner, healthcare facility, or nursing education library collections.
From The Critics
Reviewer:Carole Ann Kenner, DNS, RNC-NIC, FAAN(University of Oklahoma College of Nursing)
Description:This is a quick reference to be used in the clinical setting to assist with application of the nursing process.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a quick guide to applying the nursing process in the clinical setting. This worthy objective is met.
Audience:The audience includes any student nurse or practicing nursing who needs to apply the nursing process to clients and their families. The author is a well respected nurse who has a long history of work in nursing diagnosis.
Features:The book uses an alphabetical approach to discussing the accepted NANDA nursing diagnoses. This format makes it easy to find the diagnosis to fit a client's condition. In each of the diagnostic areas, there are red boxes that call out the NIC and NOC classifications, further assisting the nurse in the application of the nursing process. No real shortcomings are noted.
Assessment:This is the 11th edition of a highly successful handbook on nursing diagnosis. The new edition was needed due to changes and the updating of NANDA, NIC, and NOC statements. There are many handbooks on nursing diagnoses, but this one is very easy to use and is small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket. Competition includes Ackley and Ladwig's Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: A Guide to Planning Care, 6th edition (Elsevier, 2004), which includes information and the linkage with evidence-based practice that is missing in Carpenito-Moyet's book. Wilkinson's Nursing Diagnosis Handbook with NIC Interventions and NOC Outcomes, 7thedition (Prentice Hall Health, 2000), is outdated in the current language whereas Carpenito-Moyet's is very current. This handbook is a wonderful addition to any student or practicing nurse's library if they are working with clients and their families to formulate a plan of care.
Booknews
A handy reference guide to nursing diagnosis, organized in outline format. Each nursing diagnosis covers definitions, characteristics, related factors, outcome criteria, and interventions, and diagnostic clusters show how nursing diagnoses are used in all clinical areas. Nurses usefull

I bought this book as a nursing student. It is a good book if you are already a nurse, but for learning, it really doesn't help much. It gives all the tasks, but doesn't really do much more. It doesn't show a rational for each intervention, and as you know, that is one of the things we have to have. Other than that, it has great knowledge.
