Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mony Fraer, MD, FACP, FASN (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This is the sixth edition of a practical, scientific guide to the nutritional principles and management of patients with different stages and types of kidney disorders (acute renal failure, progressive renal insufficiency, chronic renal failure, kidney stones, nephrotic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and renal transplantation). The revised chapters are authored by nutrition experts, dietitians, and nephrologists from the Americas and Europe.
Purpose: Intended to be a practical and comprehensive guide, this handbook covers all areas of nutrition as they relate to kidney disease over the span of 336 pages.
Audience: Everyone who provides care to patients with kidney disease will benefit from this book.
Features: Among the topics covered are nutritional needs for healthy adults, how diet can impact kidney function and how renal insufficiency can affect nutrient metabolism, assessment of nutritional status, management of lipid as well as calcium/phosphorus abnormalities and bone metabolism, requirements for trace minerals and vitamins, methods for assessing the adequacy of nutritional intervention in uremia, dietary guidelines, menus and lists of supplements. Meal planning and enteral and parenteral nutrition are also covered. Topics new to this sixth edition include the effect of salt on hypertension, the effect of diet on kidney stones, and the effects of exercise and obesity on chronic kidney disease. The figures and tables are useful for quick referral. The references are updated and the book ends with a useful 30-page index.
Assessment: This is the best handbook on nutrition and kidney diseases I've seen, clearly and concisely presenting as much data as larger books. Over successive editions, the editors have perfected their formula and have managed to make this handbook better and better.

From The Critics
New edition of a pocket-sized handbook that provides a clinical update on the dietary management of the kidney patient. From renal failure to renal transplant, experts in nephrology and clinical nutrition cover the unique nutritional requirements and dietary guidelines for related conditions, integrating scientific foundations and clinical wisdom. The 15 chapters include topics such as nutritional factors in the mortality of dialysis patients, malnutrition, trace elements and vitamins, requirements for the pre-dialysis patient, the use of nutritional therapies to delay the loss of kidney function, dietary guidelines for calcium, phosphorus, trace elements and vitamins, and others. Although the information is intended for the medical profession and much of it is technical in nature, it could also be useful and/or of interest to the patient. Edited by Mitch (Renal division, Emory U. School of Medicine) and Klahr (internal medicine, Washington U. School of Medicine). Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
