Features: Among the topics covered are nutritional needs for healthy adults, how diet can impact kidney function and how renal insufficiency can affect nutrient metabolism, assessment of nutritional status, management of lipid as well as calcium/phosphorus abnormalities and bone metabolism, requirements for trace minerals and vitamins, methods for assessing the adequacy of nutritional intervention in uremia, dietary guidelines, menus and lists of supplements. Meal planning and enteral and parenteral nutrition are also covered. Topics new to this sixth edition include the effect of salt on hypertension, the effect of diet on kidney stones, and the effects of exercise and obesity on chronic kidney disease. The figures and tables are useful for quick referral. The references are updated and the book ends with a useful 30-page index.
Assessment: This is the best handbook on nutrition and kidney diseases I've seen, clearly and concisely presenting as much data as larger books. Over successive editions, the editors have perfected their formula and have managed to make this handbook better and better.
