Description: This the second edition of a guide to the diagnosis and treatment of urologic disorders in infants, children, and adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a comprehensive resource in the office, clinic, emergency room, or classroom. The book meets the editors' worthy objectives and is an important handbook for nonpediatric urologists.
Audience: The book is written for nonpediatric urologists as a resource to manage infants, children, and adolescents with urologic conditions. The authors and editors are credible authorities in the field.
Features: Drs. Baskin and Kogan's second edition is an important handbook for primary care physicians, residents of all specialties, nurse practitioners, and even urologists who do not specialize in pediatric urology. The book covers the full range of issues in pediatric urology, which are described in concise chapters with multiple illustrations and tables. Several new chapters are included in this edition including laparoscopy, treatment of urinary incontinence and constipation, and preparing pediatric patients for anesthesia. There is also a unique section on online recommendations to direct parental questions and concerns. Several updated chapters on hypospadias, urinary tract infections, hydronephrosis, and many others allow the reader to keep up-to-date with current evaluation and treatment options. Although there are several algorithms in some of the chapters, additional algorithms would contribute significantly to this already well-organized and well-written handbook. I recommend that those using this handbook read Dr. Laurence Baskin's warm remembrance of Dr. John Duckett, Jr., a senior editor of the first edition.
Assessment: This is a book that should be in the library of any nonpediatric urologist treating children with urologic issues. The second edition is a warranted update on the first edition.
