About the Author

ROBERT T. AMMERMAN, PhD, is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati and Staff Psychologist at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. He has authored more than seventy-five papers and book chapters. Dr. Ammerman is also a Diplomate in Behavioral Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology.
MICHEL HERSEN, PhD, is Professor and Dean of the School of Professional Psychology at Pacific University. He has authored and edited numerous books, journals, and articles in the field of assessment.

This is a 23 chapter edited book on treatment and prevention services for children and adolescents. After an introduction that focuses on synthesizing the results of various meta-analytic reviews, the book is divided into four sections: general issues, intervention format and settings, preventive interventions, and treatment interventions. The stated purpose of this handbook is to expand thinking about treatment to include addressing complex social problems faced by children and adolescents. This worthwhile objective is met for the primarily academic audience of the text. The tone of the book is very academic. Some clinicians and administrators would likely find the text worthwhile. There are a few graphs, figures, and photographs; however, the book is predominantly text. Each chapter is referenced very well. The reference sections alone are useful contributions. Most of the chapters are literature reviews although several discuss innovative interventions that are not published. Like many edited books, the text is a wonderful collection of individual chapters that do not really hang together. The scope is very broad and likely of interest to a relatively circumspect group of researchers. The book is best used as a reference in child and adolescent health and mental health service areas where the reader selects chapters of personal relevance. In this capacity, the book is an excellent contribution.
