The Clan of the Free: The History of HorseClan

Chapter Two:
Silver burst out of the undergrowth, panting, and skidded to a halt on the edge of the clearing. Noelleap halted beside him, out of breath. The black and silver tom stared across the clearing, his eyes widening with fear and wonder.
He was staring at the largest group of cats he had ever seen in his life. Cats of all shapes and sizes—toms, shecats, kits, elders, ginger cats, black cats, gray cats, white cats, torrtoiseshells, tabbies...
His eyes were drawn to two cats in particular, who were in the center of the clearing. They were circling each other, claws unsheathed and ears flattened. The other cats didn't seem to notice, and went about doing their own business. A few were clustered around the two fighting, yowling and hissing.
One was a shaggy-furred dark gray shecat. Her dark fur stuck out in every direction, her long fluffy tail sweeped the ground, and her blue eyes blazed with anger.
The second was a light gray tabby shecat. She was in a battle stance, her tabby fur bristling and icy blue eyes blazing, as the other cat circled her.
"I didn't do it!" the tabby shecat hissed defiantly, though there was worry in her meow.
"Liar!" the shaggy-furred warrior spat, bushing out her long, thick fur.
"What's going on?" Noelleap meowed questioningly, exchanging glances with Silver.
"I dunno," the black and silver tom meowed, then leaped down into the clearing and proceeded towards the battle.
"What's happening? Why are they fighting?" Silver asked a ginger tom who was watching the battle.
"Who are you? I've never seen you before," the ginger tom meowed, narrowing his eyes. "Anyways, Wetwhisker accused Lilywolf of murdering her Clanmate. Lilywolf denies that she did it," he explained.
"Which one of them is lying?" the silver and black tom meowed, glancing towards the two shecats.
The ginger cat shrugged, and meowed, "Who cares? They're going to fight anyway."
"C'mon, Wetwhisker!" a gray tom yowled. "Shred her ears!"
"Somebody stop them!" a red shecat meowed. "There's been enough bloodshed! The Clans should, no, need to try to be peaceful, for once!!"
Silver stared at Lilywolf and Wetwhisker, who was still snarling threats. His sea-green gaze flicked back and fourth between each of the cats, and he made up his mind.
Suddenly, Wetwhisker leaped at Lilywolf, her claws unsheathed and paws extended. Silver darted in, and shoved the shaggy shecat out of the way.
"Quick, follow me!" the silver and black tom told Lilywolf, beckoning to the light tabby with his tail as Wetwhisker staggered to her paws again.
"What you helping HER for?" the gray tom hissed.
"You'll pay for this!" Wetwhisker yowled.
"Come ON," Silver hissed through gritted teeth, shoving Lilywolf away from the others. The light gray tabby shecat got to her paws, nodded quickly, and followed Silver.
The black and silver tom dodged a blow from Wetwhisker and fled for the forest, Lilywolf hard on his paws. From behond them, Wetwhisker began to screech, "Cowards! Come back here and finish it!"
Silver didn't turn around to see if Lilywolf was still behind him, or if they were being chased by Wetwhisker. Heart beating rapidly and legs skimming over the leaf-strewn ground, the silver and black tom kept running.
Suddenly, something dark loomed before him, and he skidded to a halt.
Before him stood a cave.

It is important for practitioners to screen for drug and alcohol abuse and recognize the contributions these substances can make to the diagnostic and treatment conceptualization. This book provides just such information for a variety of substances and their medical consequences.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference on the medical consequences of the most commonly abused recreational drugs, including alcohol, prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs (OTCs).
Audience: Any clinicians working with patients who abuse substances are the intended readers. Students of medicine, psychology, and the neurosciences will also find this of interest. The editor has a reputation as a leading authority in this field and has brought together other experts.
Features: The book covers most major drugs, including stimulants, inhalants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and steroids. OTC medications, such as antihistamines and ephedrine, are also covered as are commonly used substances, such as tobacco and caffeine. Each chapter begins with an overview, is divided into sections and subsections to clearly delineate the progression of the topic, and concludes with a summary section. The informative chapters include tables, figures, and illustrations when appropriate. Although a few chapters are dedicated to the neuropsychological, neurochemical, and neuroanatomical consequences of alcohol and drug use, the majority are focused on peripheral medical consequences. While the inclusion of neurological topics is welcomed, it is unclear why they are dealt with separately. Much more complete coverage would have been achieved by integrating a neuropsychological section into each of the medical chapters, as many of the substances discussed in the later chapters are absent from the initial neurological chapters. The other weakness is the lack of updating in some chapters. For example, one section on the neuropsychological effects of cocaine contains no references more recent than 1999 and another section refers to a "recent study" dating to 1995 (13 years might be "recent" in geological time, but not in today's biomedical pursuits).
Assessment: This is a handy reference to have on hand. Although the content and references really should be more up to date in this second edition, the book remains the single best resource for information on the medical consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. The well organized layout makes any topic easy to reference in just a few minutes. Clinicians should keep this readily available.
