Description: This handbook has been appropriately conceived to provide succinct guidance in regard to radiation therapy treatment planning. This is the third edition, last published in 2014. The book is also available online.
Purpose: The authors state the purpose of the book is to provide approaches to radiotherapy planning that are descriptive and not overly prescriptive, easy to read, and pertinent to general practice. In successfully achieving this goal, the authors have provided a valuable resource to the radiation oncology community. The website provides electronic access to the book. This feature is particularly valuable in regard to review of images and figures, which, due to the handbook format, are somewhat small in the printed edition.
Audience: Resident physicians and medical physicists, as well as medical students interested in radiation oncology will find this book of greatest interest. Practicing radiation oncologists, particularly those who subspecialize and find themselves treating diseases they infrequently treat, will also find this succinct overview valuable. With the current edition, authorship of individual chapters was transitioned from resident and faculty to exclusively faculty members at the Cleveland Clinic.
Features: The book includes two initial chapters on the topics of general physics principles and tools for simulation and treatment. The remaining 11 chapters address specific diseases/disease sites. It is important to note this is a handbook that includes sound practices related to treatment planning but is not meant as a comprehensive tome covering nuances of difference in practice from one department to the next.
Assessment: This book is a worthwhile addition to the radiation oncology literature. Residents in particular are likely to find the book of use both as a quick reference and to facilitate discussion with their attending physicians of fine points of treatment planning that may vary from one department to the next. While there has not been a "sea change" in fundamental concepts of treatment planning since the last edition was published in 2014, there have been considerable advances and updates, for example with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), that warrant the arrival of this latest third edition.
