Booknews
**** The first of two mammoth volumes of a revised comprehensive reference, the first edition of which (1978) is cited in Sheehy. Coverage in v.1 includes everything from the principles of geometric, physical, and quantum optics to the optical properties of water and the atmosphere. Included is description of such optical sources as light-emitting diodes and lasers and such detection techniques as energy, waveform, and imaging. In addition, the first volume explores the detection and processing capabilities of human vision, explains optical thin film coatings, and discusses various design and fabrication processes. An 'overview,' not a 'handbook'

If you're looking for anything deeper than what you'll find in most undergraduate texts on optics, don't look in 'Handbook of Optics.' As a designer, I would expect a 'handbook' to have real nitty-gritty design rules and examples. Instead, 'Handbook of Optics' stays well above the details, giving only the most general overviews of any given subject in optics. For example, no detailed discussion is given on design methods for laser resonators (in fact, Siegman's 15-year-old book, 'Lasers,' gives MUCH more information on the subject). On this same thread, no mention is made anywhere about bow-tie cavities, a very useful optical instrument in wide use since the late 80's. I have had the first volume of 'Handbook of Optics' for over two years now, and have not yet found it to be of any use. The only decent section was the one written by Warren Smith, but even this topic ('Techniques of first-order layout') is better handled in Smith's legendary 'Modern Optical Engineering.'
