This tenth title in Facts On File's "Handbook to Life" series by Jones (Arabic philology, Univ. of Barcelona) and the late Cosman (CUNY), a noted medievalist, covers lands formerly ruled by the Roman Empire, approximately 500-1500 CE. The three volumes span 12 chapters devoted to history, society, economy and trade, warfare and weapons, philosophy and religion, mysticism and magic, medicine, science and technology, art and architecture, literature, music and dance, holidays and festivals, and clothing, costume, and textiles. Each chapter looks at its subject from the perspective of the three dominant civilizations of the period: Christian, Jewish, and Muslim. Chapters begin with a brief introduction describing the commonalities and intersections of the civilizations and then continue with a detailed look at each civilization separately.
