Overview

Handcrafting Chain and Bead Jewelry shows how to create beautiful, dimensional silver, copper, and brass chains using simple tools. The main style is based on the elegant, classical Byzantine pattern, and uses the Golden Ratio to determine the circumference of a chain’s interlocking rings based on the thickness of the wire. Illustrated step-by-step directions show how to calculate the circumference of the rings, how to wrap wire into coils, how to cut, and finally, how to assemble the chain. Starting from the basic Byzantine, new chain makers can then progress to increasingly Byzantine variations, including linear, knot, crown, and combination chains. Incorporating beads and charms offers endless possibilities for crafters who will soon, surely, be locked up in chains!

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Jump rings by the hundreds are the basis of the projects in both these books. Plumlee is an expert on ancient chain design whose projects for necklaces and bracelets are based on classic Byzantine chain design with added embellishments. Taylor and White's book is a collection of projects by several artists inspired by the techniques of medieval chain mail armor. All are quite elegant and contemporary and require little more equipment than pliers and infinite patience. Both books are recommended for public library crafts collections. I Also Recommend:

    Fun with Byzantine Chain

This book was great for someone who wants to learn how to do a Byzantine style chainmaille or someone who already knows how to make the chain but is looking for new ideas, styles and ideas to do with it.

I've been doing Chainmaille for quite a few years now. So I'm always looking for something new to do with with the different styles. I found that the author knows what he is doing and gives directions that are easy to understand for beginners. He also gives instructions on how to do a double chain and an Inca Puno Chain but does not give projects to go with them.

My one and only complaint is the table for choosing your ring size is difficult to understand if you are not making your own rings. He uses a metric system where as I order my rings from a place doesn't use the same system that he does.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in making chainmaille that is not the same stuff that you see at renfaires.
