Overview

With lilting, pastoral melodies and a stunningly concentrated story of jealousy, obsessive love, and murder, Handel's opera Acis and Galatea was one of the composer's most popular works during his lifetime, and it remains so today to Handel's many admirers. The opera is in English with a libretto by John Gay (of The Beggar's Opera fame), and it was Handel's first operatic foray away from Italian. Taken from the Greek myth set down in Ovid's Metamorphoses, it tells the story of two young lovers -- Acis the shepherd and Galatea the sea-nymph (here in the guise of a shepherdess) -- who are tormented to a tragic end by the one-eyed giant Polyphemus. This lovely performance by the Scholars of London was recorded live in 1991, and it contains an effective, if unspectacular, roster of soloists. Kym Amps's expressively sung Galatea stands out, however, especially her redemptive air at the opera's end, "Heart, the seat of soft delight," a gentle aria in which the blood of the slain Acis, through Galatea's divine powers, becomes a river of clear, flowing water. The Scholars' recording faces competition from William Christie's 1999 version, but it is recommended even so for the freshness and warmth it brings to Handel's touching tale of two lovers' woe.
