Handel Arias from Rinaldo & Orlando

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
Ewa Podles is a true contralto, that rarest of voices, and the scope of her repertoire is as wide as her vocal range. Luxuriant and darkly vibrant, her low voice is the envy of many mezzos, but she ascends above the staff too, extending three octaves into bright, sunny soprano territory. Her equally wide-ranging repertory encompasses contemporary music by Krzysztof Penderecki, the mezzo roles of the 19th-century masters Verdi and Wagner, and 18th-century works by Gluck and Handel as well. But with her full-bodied, earthy voice, Podles's performances of early music are particularly notable, a welcome change from the often chaste, bloodless recordings of Baroque specialists. This album of Italian arias from two operas by Handel -- Rinaldo and Orlando -- is not for the weak of heart. Handel's virtuoso arias put Podles's remarkable instrument through its paces, but her powerful voice negotiates the composer's delicate coloratura with style and relative ease. Constantine Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra accompany in a lively performance set apart by that distinctively coarse, bristly sound so characteristic of many Russian ensembles. Early music purists beware: If you like your Handel refined and clean, this album is not for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer Handel with zest and zing and a little roughness around the edges, Podles is the singer of your dreams.
Gramophone - Stanley Sadie
Podles tosses off the bravura music with brilliance, almost with abandon, with each note sharply articulated in the semiquaver runs; she matches the trumpet with her crisp attack in 'Or la tromba', and she ventures several rapid tempos... This is altogether quite a tour de force of Handel singing.
