Faythe Levine traveled 19,000 miles to document what has emerged as a marriage between historical technique, punk culture, and the D.I.Y. ethos. For Handmade Nation (along with the documentary film of the same name, coming in 2009) she and Cortney Heimerl have selected 24 makers and 5 essayists who work within different media and have different methodologies to provide a microcosm of the crafting community. Participants in this community share ideas and encouragement through websites, blogs, boutiques, galleries, and craft fairs. Together they have forged a new economy and lifestyle based on creativity, determination, and networking. Faythe Levine and Cortney Heimerl are both based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2004 Levine founded Art vs. Craft, Milwaukee's independent craft fair. She is co-owner & curator of Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery.

    Handmade Nation Gives You New Directions

    I bought the book because I am a crafter. I was expecting more of a study than interviews with with crafters across the country. What I got was better than what I expected. There were many links to resources for me to check out to meet others in my area that are teaching crafting and offering places to sell work.

    I was a bit disappointed that the book seemed very focused on female crafters. There are many men out there who are sculpting, carving, sewing and designing. I don't think this was intentional because there does appear to be more women crafting for an income than there do men, but it would have been nice to see men represented more.

    The book is the written version of a film documentary. I'm glad I got the book because it has all the web site resources right there for me to go look at so I wouldn't have had to try to remember them after walking out of a theater.
