Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Hack (professional furniture maker and avid tool collector) extols the joys of turning off the power equipment, putting hand to wood, and bringing out the beauty of a project with skill and superior hand tools. Numerous color and b&w photographs illuminate 13 chapters covering every type of plane and techniques for using each, how to read the grain of a board and plane figured wood, how to decide which planes are essential and where to find them, special techniques ranging from essential bench planes to oddities such as spill planes, techniques of contemporary craftsmen, advice from an auctioneer, and stories of a few incurable collectors. THE book on hand planes

Garrett's book on hand planes is THE book on hand planes. I have read dozens of them and no author I have yet come across holds a candle to Garrett's in-depth knowledge, thorough explanations, and simple, humble writing style. Like all of Hack's furniture, this book is literally a work of art. Whether I want to learn another little gem of hand plane advice or just want to relax and look over the beautiful photos, this book is one of my absolute favorites to pick up.

    HIGHLY recommended.
