Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Editor Harper dishes up encouragement and advice for young women in this uneven follow-up to 33 Things Every Girl Should Know: Stories, Songs, Poems and Smart Talk by 33 Extraordinary Women (Crown, 1998), edited by Tonya Bolden. This time Harper focuses on life skills and advice from contributors such as inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, MTV veejay-host Kennedy, and authors Lois Lowry and Norma Fox Mazer. The topics are appealing and timely for teenage girls, ranging from family issues to mentoring, becoming handy around the house, investing and money, and body image. Hipper than the Chicken Soup and Taste Berries books, Hands On should appeal to most young women looking for inspiration from those who have been there. Some essays are on the dry side, and a few try too hard to be hip, but most are fun. A recipe for making a cake that features Wite-Out and dust bunnies for the ex who dumped you is sure to bring a laugh. Although the layout of the book seems a bit disjointed and random, the format will appeal to young women—short, easily read essays on interesting topics, surrounded by funky fonts and graphics, Trade pb. School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-A follow-up to Tonya Bolden's 33 Things Every Girl Should Know (Crown, 1998). Sports figures, politicians, authors, celebrities, and other successful women share their ideas for living life to the fullest. Topics covered include basic budgeting, car repair, taking control of one's health, manners, self-expression, self-reflection, and more. Though many entries are unevenly written, most offer comforting counsel and positive encouragement. Highlights include Naomi Shihab Nye's "Your Voice Is a Ticket," Iyanla Vanzant's "Know Your Inner ABC's," Lois Lowry's "Write Your Name on a Wall," and Jessica Lu's "Ignore Advice." Black-and-white clip-art quality graphics appear throughout. Brief biographies appear as endnotes. Interesting material for browsing but not an essential addition to the girl-power shelves.-Katie O'Dell, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
