Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This mini-encyclopedia serves as a general Chicago reference tool and visitors guide. It covers nearly every important event, place, person, or concept from Haymarket to Mayor Washington. Part one explores the city's history and is divided into two sections: an encyclopedia and a ``timeline of Chicago history'' from 1673 when Joliet and Marquette reached Chicago until 1986 when the refurbished Chicago Theater reopened. In both sections the entries are informative and well chosen, although some entries are uneven. Part two is a brief description of the 77 official neighborhoods. A fun and informative quick reference to Chicago's history; certain to appeal to Chicago and urban history buffs. Anne Steinfeldt, Chicago Historical Soc.
