Introduction

The HandspringVisor

I bought my first handheld, a PalmPilot Personal, in 1997 for a number of reasons. Of course, the gadget factor was pretty high. Plus, the PalmPilot was getting raves for its ability to store volumes of formerly paper-based contact and scheduling information in a device slightly larger than a deck of cards. You could download thirdparty software directly from the Web, then synchronize those programs and your data with your PC at the single push of a button. The PalmPilot was a huge success.

In the midst of that success, the core team that invented the PalmPilot had their eyes I on something more than just more modified Palms. So they left their parent company, 3Com, and founded Handspring, Inc. Their new device, the Visor, was much like a PalmPilot, and used the same Palm oper- ating system. But the Visor included the Springboard expansion port, recasting the handheld from a glorified address book to a multifaceted organizer that supported extras like MP3 music players, digital cameras, and even a cellular phone. That modularity, plus multicolored translucent product designs, gave the Visor personality.

The combination of expandability, attitude, and organizational power makes the Visor more than just a replacement for paper calendars and address books. Yes, it's a cool gadget. Yes, you can accessorize it to your heart's content with styli, cases, and custom flipcovers. Yes, it piques people's curiosity and makes complete strangers walk up and ask, "What's that?" But it's also an efficient, well-thought-out organizational tool that performs its tasks exceptionally well. It's not a self-contained computer in a smaller container, but an extension of the information that millions of people rely on every day.

Handspring Visor: Visual QuickStart Guide

This book is meant to be a compact, functional extension of the Visor. Not just a howto approach to using an electronic tool, this Visual QuickStart Guide is a primer on how to effectively get control of your schedule, contacts, and all the data that used to occupy reams of papers and Post-it notes. My aim for this book is to show you what's possible with the Visor, from its basic features to tips and tricks for using it smarter and faster. At times I'll personally recommend a product or a technique because it's what I've found useful. As a result, and to keep this book from becoming ten times larger than the device it covers, I dori t list every product on the market-I want you to have fun exploring what's available (see Appendix C for some good starting points). People who swear by their handhelds also tend to integrate them into their lives, moving beyond business meetings to birthdays, home finances, electronic books, and the occasional game of solitaire. It continues to be an invaluable part of my everyday life. Id love to know how your Visor helps (or hinders) your life.
