Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Nancy K. Wallace
Arranged in question-and-answer format, information in this newly updated book is organized in thirteen broad categories. Beginning with a chronology that hits the high points from the Prehistoric Era through the twenty-first century, subsequent chapters cover a huge range of subjects including religion, exploration, war, disasters, philosophy, and science. Concise, informative entries range from a short paragraph to several pages of text. Many contain black-and-white pictures. Subjects often cross category lines (for example, information on Alexander the Great can be found under the Prehistoric Era, Pan-Hellenism, Absolutism, and Philosophy). Interesting tidbits lurk in unexpected places; the question "What is the G-8?" appears in the section on Government and Politics, informing readers that it refers to "an annual meeting of the world's leading industrial democracies." Early twenty-first-century events cover the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001; the death of Pope John Paul II; the loss of the space shuttle Columbia; and Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Facts about the Titanic, quantum theory, and a list of the twenty-seven amendments to the U. S. Constitution coexist with the Taliban, Chernobyl, and Indira Ghandi. Although packed with information, this handy volume is not meant to replace standard reference works but rather to serve as "a resource for learning-for brushing up on the events, terms, and history makers." An ideal "study aid . . . refresher . . . and pleasure reading for the curious-minded." It is one of ten in the Handy Answer Books series that also includes titles on math, science, biology, and dinosaurs, among other topics.
