Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Titles can be misleading, but not in this case-it truly is a handy science answer book. Comprehensive, the text is divided into various subject areas including physics and chemistry, space, earth, climate and weather, minerals and other materials, energy, technology, and environment, gathering answers to reference questions as librarians are called on to do daily. A comprehensive index, done by the librarians who compiled the information, makes the material accessible and easy to find. Pages are full of fascinating tidbits, complemented by illustrations, photos, charts, graphs, and maps, such as the fact that the average person has about 100,000 scalp hairs, that the actual amount varies with natural hair color, and that hair grows on average nine inches a year. Readers also learn that there were 437 nuclear power plants operational worldwide in 2000 with 34 still under construction, and 104 of them are in the United States. A librarian will want a copy of this book behind the desk for ready reference, but students will want a copy for themselves to peruse time and again just for fun. Index. Illus. Photos. Charts.
