Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati
Hannah can't wait for her baby sister to be born. "Patsy" is the name she has picked out for her. Hannah is excited about all the fun things that she and her sister will do once "Patsy" is born. When "Patsy" turns out to be "Benjamin," Hannah goes into denial. After all, she already has a younger brother! Hannah wants a baby sister and is not happy about the unexpected turn of events. But when she visits her new brother and mother at the hospital, Hannah surprises herself. He is soft and cuddly. Maybe she can do fun things with Benjamin too. Hannah bonds with the new baby almost as soon as he is put in her arms.
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
The expectations of an excited big sister are captured in this picture book. Hannah is full of plans about her new baby's name, welcoming, and plans for their future together. When she has a new baby brother, she is disappointed, but only until she holds him in her arms. Then she is full of love and happy new plans. A good book to help a child adjust to the beginnings of a new birth.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Hannah already has a little brother, so she tries positive thinking to ensure that the baby her mother is expecting will be a girl. She has decided in advance what her sister will look like, what they will do together, and what her first word will be ("Hannah"). The girl's parents gently warn her that she may be setting herself up for disappointment. When she learns that the baby is a boy, her dismay is realistic; however, when she gets to hold the newborn, she decides that "he's pretty cute for a baby brother." This loving family is warmly portrayed in both the text and in the cheerful, childlike paintings with Russo's signature use of flat areas of color and pattern. Hannah's own birth has been lovingly chronicled in Waiting for Hannah (Greenwillow, 1989), and her reappearance as she adjusts to her new sibling is welcome.-Pam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ
