Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Lighting candles, making latkes, and playing with a dreidel highlight this early reader geared for entertainment and to inform children about Hanukkah. A softened photo of a cheerful youngster sitting in back of glowing candles graces the book's cover. This book is from the "Holiday Fun" series and as such, it contains a double spread of Picture Words, right up front. Each picture word, known as a rebus, gives readers a leg up when they read the text. Readers discover that candles are lit on the eight nights of Hanukkah, singing takes place, and special foods are created. In addition, a page that closely matches its photo shows that gold-wrapped chocolate coins and brightly wrapped presents are given during the holiday. Youngsters and grown-ups in the bright photos clearly enjoy the holiday time. End matter includes a "Words to Know" page. The page defines dreidel, Hanukkah, latkes, and menorah and shows how to pronounce the same words. A final page gives three more books and up-to-date websites for further information.
