Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Similar in format to Chronicle's Crafty Girl series, Happening Hanukkah: Creative Ways to Celebrate by Debra Mostow Zakarin, illus. by Amanda Haley, describes how to make various presents, from gift coupons (promising such services as breakfast in bed) to hand-painted sweatshirts. The author also provides instructions for making candy dreidels, lighting the menorah, and more.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-This book is chock-full of ideas for all kinds of cool presents, ranging from coupons for bed-making and video nights to picture frames, chef's aprons, games, jewelry, menorahs, and vases. Many of the projects can be made or adapted for other occasions as well. There are suggestions for a Hanukkah party, including recipes and traditional activities, and some history. Designed for the "American Girls" set, the text is hip and friendly, with clearly written, easy-to-follow instructions. Most of the craft materials must be purchased at specialty supply stores, though some things can be found around the house. Readers are advised to seek adult help and permission several times throughout the book, and are also reminded to think of those less fortunate as they work on presents for friends and family. Cartoon line drawings show the finished products, but only a few of the crafts have illustrations for each step. An adequate choice for collections with a high demand for holiday craft books.-M. A.
