Overview

As seen on CNN.com

One couple's celebration of risking it all for the dream of living a happier life.

In this humorous and witty account, Nadine Pisani shares what it is like to follow her dream of quitting her job and carving a new life under the sunny skies of Costa Rica. Along the way, she finds reliable utilities are not that reliable, quirky neighbors are unavoidable, and tackling red tape takes the strength of a linebacker.

Much like Frances Mayes in Tuscany and Peter Mayle in Provence, it's never easy moving to a foreign country. Whether dealing with Dolores the Dog Lady, an uninvited neighbor who pees on the front lawn to get closer to nature, or Jim the Jehovah witness with fourteen aliases and two passports, Costa Rica introduces the reader to a medley of characters and situations. It turns out becoming a Central American diva is harder than it looks.

But even with its challenges, you'll learn why Costa Rica is ranked as one of the happiest places on earth—and you too may want to taste the Pura Vida lifestyle.

"One point Nadine learns from her experience is that we are all allowed to choose how we ingest what life deals us and I thank her for reminding me. And her humor! If she ever wants to look for a second occupation, she might want to consider 'stand-up comic'" Tony Ortez, Howler Magazine

What a wonderful book! This book presents a very honest portrait

What a wonderful book! This book presents a very honest portrait of everyday life in Costa Rica. This is a great read for someone seriously considering a move to foreign country, or someone looking for a little taste of paradise from the comfort of their living room!

Cute beach read but got a bit preachy.

Yeah yeah yeah, we should all give up safe indoor plumbing and booby trap our cars with multiple traps in the event of a robbery, we all know THAT sounds like paradise. The stories seem a little contrived sometimes but this is a cute read. I find it funny that the author believes that her favorite vendors are saving all the best produce "just for you!". I mean come on, they say that to every gringo. The only reason produce is under the counter in a bag is because the produce on the counter hasn't sold out yet...work a vegtable stand for awhile, you'll figure it out. Made me realize that I don't want to live in "paraidse" in a trailer park.

    Enjoyable, but not really funny.

I think it's fun, cute and easy to read, but it's not really funny. I felt that Nadine sometimes tried to hard to be funny. I smiled a few times, but never actually laughed.

I enjoyed the story and their misadventures. I do recommend it.

    Funniest book ever.

This book was the funniest book I have ever read. I had to put it down when I first started it because my muscles were so sore from laughing so hard. I have also wanted to go to Costa Rico but I haven't found anyone else who wants to travel with me. This book has made me want to go even more.
I am now reading the sequel and it is just as funny. I just love the way this author writes.

    Time flew by!

What an enjoyable book to read! As a couple about 2-3 months from moving to Costa Rica we found it very informative regarding what to expect and helpful in how to prepare. As with most it seems, very few people understand the desire for adventure and ability to live in such a remarkable country. Your perspective and style made your book fun to read. Time flew by and it was over too soon.

Adventure and wonder meet witty Tri-State area escapees!

Very great read. This book is a true testament that life as we know it is all about perspective. It is an adventurous chronical of events that inadvertantly reveals that the mind, body, and soul can finally come together to determine the greatest gift in life is PEACE, not POSESSIONS. Many people dream of retiring to a tropical paradise. Some achieve this dream, some do not. But the sacrifice that is needed to do so is rarely given by all. Sometimes in life in order to gain everything, the requirement is to GIVE UP everything. (Well, almost) Well done.

    Hilariously good advice!

Her humorous tales of transitioning from the U.S. to Costa Rica make this an enjoyable and educational read. Her experiences were not unlike my own in moving to Ecuador. I highly recommend this as a primer for those interested in what to expect in Central and South America.

If you need 1 more reason to move to Costa Rica - it is right here!

Nadine's wicked humor, self discovery and incredible openness should not be missed. She and Rob share there journey to Costa Rica both in terms of personal awareness and the reality of of a new life and the adventure of a new culture. The journey with them made me laugh so hard my ribs hurt and just a few pages later I was in awe of Nadine's personal insights.

Thinking about moving, if Costa Rica is on your short list, this is a must read.

Thanks for sharing Nadine & Rob,

    Chuck

    Hilarious!!

I loved this book. I've read other books about becoming an expat and they were either sugar-coated or terrifyingly negative. The author just tells it like it is, but you can see she loves it. On top of the honesty, it is just downright funny. lI would highly recommend it.
