A Resource For Anyone Touched By Cancer

After battling chronic Hodgkins' Lymphoma for the past 6 years I figured I'd be through with issues of grief, loss, anger, inadequacy and flinching everytime someone innocently asked 'How are you?'--Dr. Harpham's chapters about emotions and taking action helped me to realize that the cancer journey is an on-going process, my feelings are normal and that no matter what I can find hope and happiness.

    A must read

Many patients after a cancer diagnosis are often reluctant to read about the subject. However, if one were to read 1 book only, this is the book to read. Despite being a little long, there is much to be learned from it. Dr. Harpham has a three pronged approach --- knowledge, hope and action. As a survivor, she knows about disappointments and recurrances. Yet she also knows about the joy of being alive after receiving cutting edge treatment. Her many metaphores are useful in getting her message across, and throughout the book she interweaves her personal experiences, lending credibility to what she has to say. While Dr. Harpham had to give up her medical practice out of necessity, as a writer she administers to a wider patient base. Being a librarian working in an oncology library geared to the layperson, I consider this a must read.

Helped me find the Best Answers for Me

Finally, a book that helped me find the best answers for me! I have mild diabetes, and I am trying to help relatives and friends who are dealing with a variety of serious and chronic health problems (cancer, heart disease, arthritis, ). Dr. Harpham is a knowledgeable and caring doctor who explains things in the most easy-to-understand way. But what makes this book special is that Dr. Harpham is also a patient who clearly understands how hard it can be to get good care and find happiness. Dr. Harpham did, and now I can, too! This book helped me sort through all the information out there. Thanks to this book, I feel confident about how to get the best care for me and how to (as Dr. Harpham says) find happiness in my storms. I am not just thinking about what might help I am doing it!

    This book really works!

Books can make a difference, and this one definitely does! I've already bought multiple copies to share with friends and family facing various illnesses, and they're emailing or calling me to say it works! One friend, whose husband was depressed and hopeless about his illness, said, ¿I told my husband to read just the first 10 pages and if he didn¿t want to read any more I¿d leave him alone. Well he started to read and now this book is reshaping his attitude toward the disease and what he needs to do.¿ I've seen how Dr. Harpham's book gives people hope and helps them find the best path for them to healing.
