Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheryl Peterson
Harvey Hare suddenly realizes his birthday is coming, so he stays up late to plan his party and write out his invitations. The next day he delivers invitations to Mole, the rabbit family, the bees, and the birds, but they are all so busy gathering food that they thank Harvey and get right back to work. Harvey's a little disappointed and is afraid his friends will be too busy to come. He is tired after all the invitations are delivered, but comes home to a sweet surprise! Young children will relate to Harvey's anxiety that no one will come to his party. The text is accompanied by colorful and detailed illustrations.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2Harvey Hare, the postman, remembers that tomorrow is his birthday and decides to deliver party invitations to all of his friends. Of course, they're all busy baking and gathering seeds and nuts, and Harvey worries that no one will come to his celebration. Naturally, he arrives home and finds all of the animals in his garden with a cake and a feast. This story has a predictable plot, a lifeless text, and static illustrations. Even very young children will guess what's going to happen, and there's no fun along the way. The scratchy illustrations don't add any sense of warmth or friendship, and the text is so matter-of-fact that it doesn't involve readers in the set-up.Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, NY
