Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cheryl Peterson
Josefina is pleased when her much respected godmother, Tia Magdalena, asks for her help with spring chores. Josefina hopes to become a healer someday like Tia Magdalena, but while helping her aunt, she makes a terrible mistake. This dashes her hopes, until a terrifying experience with her friend Marianna restores her confidence, and gives her a second chance. This is Book Four in the Josefina "American Girls Collection," and young fans will enjoy this latest selection as Josefina discovers her true gifts.
Kirkus Reviews
In this entry in one strand of the American Girls series (Meet Josefina, 1997, etc.), Josefina is approaching her tenth birthday and has decided she wants to be a healer like her godmother, T¡a Magdalena. Participating in family and community activitiesþraising a baby goat, helping to replaster the church, and helping T¡a Magdalenaþtake up much of her time. Near the end she is given the opportunity to prove her ability as a healer when her friend, Mariana, is bitten by a rattlesnake. This cheerful story is packed with historical tidbits. The adorable baby goat will appeal to the target audience, and although the story can be bland, it is well-paced, and enhanced by lovely realistic illustrations. (glossary) (Fiction. 7-10)

A special treat is in store for readers in book number 4, Happy Birthday, Josefina! Find out who Florecita is. And what is going to happen to Florecita soon? A fascinating storyline along with detailed color illustrations are sure to hold the reader's attention. The section "A Peek Into The Past" offers readers insight into life in 1824 for people living in what today is called New Mexico. And the glossary will assist with vocabulary building skills. Readers will be informed about the lifestyle of Pueblo Indians during the 1800s. Here is a quote from the book: "We're all given second chances. We just have to be brave enough to take them."
