Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
The message that we are God's children, Jesus is God's Son, and Christmas is Jesus's birthday is interspersed with information about children's birthday celebrations. Shiny pages show colorful photographs of darling children on the right-hand page with text on the colored left-hand page. The cover shows a cupcake with a single candle. Inner pages show cakes with 2 and 4 candles. A gleeful little girl is surrounded by balloons. A baby has a hand in blessing on his head. A girl in bed with a teddy bear peruses an open Bible. The text reads: "God's Son is Jesus. The Bible tells us about Him." A little girl with a barrette at the end of a curl is in prayer. Other children sing and receive presents. While reading this book again and again, parents will be able to talk about the pictures and reinforce the Biblical connection. The simple message is appropriate for the age group. Children will delight in the cheerful colors and pictures of happy times. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
Children's Literature - Meagan Albright
This board book is really an odd combination of two disparate books; one focusing on birthday traditions and celebrations and the other introducing the concept of God and Christianity on a very basic level. The dichotomy is evident in the title Happy Birthday: God's Blessings to You! Both concepts would be better served as separate books, rather than shoehorning a few pages about religion into a book that otherwise focuses on birthdays. As it stands, the book lacks harmony and suffers from jarring topic shifts without adequate transitions. The concepts of birthdays and religion are not effectively connected, and the page sequence seems random rather than planned. While the illustrations are attractive and fairly age appropriate and the text is simple and clear, the strange disconnect between the book's two themes ultimately detracts from the experience of reading the text. This item is not recommended for purchase for libraries or school media centers. Reviewer: Meagan Albright
