School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Maggie McDougal has a problem. She wants to give her best friend, Bonkers, a special birthday present but, as usual, has spent all of her money. Her parents refuse to bail her out, leaving Maggie to resolve the situation herself. Unfortunately, the solution rests on the coincidence that her grandmother just happens to have a bunch of Bonker's favorite antique comics in the attic. Nevertheless, Maggie develops some independence as well as a clearer sense of the spirit of giving. Although the plot is not exciting, this novel will appeal to beginning chapter book readers because it presents a situation familiar to them. Using vivid images and neat turns of phrase, Gregory presents realistic, mildly humorous pictures of daily life. The schoolroom scenes in which the teacher struggles with the literal thinking of her students are delightfully funny, and Maggie's relationships with her family and friends are warm and believable. The chapters are short, enjoyable, and clearly structured, with one black-and-white drawing in each. Together, they move readers through the satisfying story. --Maggie McEwen, formerly at Coffin Elementary School, Brunswick, ME
