Overview

Eubie is the happiest elf at the North Pole. More than anything else, he longs to be a part of Santa's sleigh team. Instead, he's stuck checking the naughty-or-nice lists. Until one Christmas Eve he sees something strange: In the whole town of Bluesville, not a single person has been nice. So with a pinch of elfish magic and a magical whoosh, Eubie's off to Bluesville. But can he turn a whole town of naughty children nice in just one day?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Like a lump of the “unburnable coal” that figures in its plot, this picture-book adaptation of Connick’s holiday song and 2005 animated TV special never catches fire. Eubie, an incessantly chipper elf with a magic hat, aims to bring cheer and the true meaning of Christmas to dreary Bluesville, at all costs; although he breaks the rules to do so, Santa rewards his efforts. The story is full of logical gaps (the unburnable coal, already oxymoronic, can somehow be polished to a glorious luster), but Andreasen’s creamy textured paintings help a bit. Packaged with a CD of the Connick tune. Ages 4–8. (Oct.)
Children's Literature
After finding success as a bandleader, a singer, and a star on the big screen and the Broadway stage, Harry Connick, Jr. attempts to break into the world of children's picture books. Based on his catchy holiday tune with the same name, Connick's book tells the story of Eubie, an annoyingly cheery elf whose zeal for Christmas is a little overbearing even for the rest of Santa's helpers. But when he discovers the town of Bluesville doesn't have a single child on the nice list, he uses his elf magic to change the town's attitude and bring about a happy Christmas for all. Folks who are trying to limit their intake of sweets this holiday season may want to skip on this syrupy tale. The smiling, bubble-eyed elves that populate Andreasen's illustrations seem strangely static for a book based on such a rhythmic, energetic song. Though probably not destined to be a holiday classic, fans of Connick may enjoy this seasonal story while listening to the accompanying CD. Better yet, just get the original recording and pull out a well-loved copy of the Grinch. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Gr 1–3—Eubie the elf's dream is to join Santa's sleigh team on Christmas Eve, but his enthusiasm in the workshop is too distracting, so instead he is charged with checking over the famous naughty and nice lists. When he realizes that no gifts will be delivered to Bluesville, he uses his magic hat to go and spread Christmas cheer, thus breaking "Santa's most important rule"—to never use his magic hat outside of the North Pole. Though Andreasen's appealing artwork is expressive and jolly, it doesn't save this long-winded and overly simplistic story. Includes CD of Connick's song of the same title. Kirkus Reviews

Eubie is a relentlessly cheery elf whose story is based on a Christmas song by Connick, which was also previously made into an animated movie.

The storybook version finds the exultant elf checking Santa's lists and discovering that every child in the town of Bluesville is on the naughty list. He uses his magic hat to transport himself to the dreary town, which is sited at the bottom of a deep valley. When Eubie finds the town is surrounded by mountains of "unburnable coal," he helps the town's children polish the extensive surrounding mountain range so the peaks shine with sparkling light like jewels. This cooperative effort transforms the townspeople into a happy crowd of Christmas celebrants, and Eubie is rewarded for his kindness by being chosen to join Santa's sleigh team for Christmas deliveries. The story is a little long, a little illogical and much too full of words in all capitals, exclamation marks and Eubie's signature cry of "YIPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEE!" The large-format watercolor illustrations have a retro appeal, though the elves and the children look like the same species aside from pointed ears.

Kids who are familiar with the song or movie about Eubie may enjoy the story, but adult readers might be tempted to offer Eubie a lump of unburnable coal for his Christmas stocking. (author's note)(Picture book. 4-7)
