Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa A. Caudill
Michael and his dog, Cookie, excitedly awaken to get ready for Michael's first-grade graduation. In this "Ready-To-Read", Level 1 series book perfect for beginning readers, they will find success in reading the words by looking at the full page and colorful illustrations, which provide decoding clues. A note to parent and teachers in the front of the book adequately describe the four levels of books and describe Level 1 as "increased vocabulary and longer sentences for children who are just starting to read." There are one to two sentences per page and words are in a large type size, which makes it easy for beginning readers to follow. Michael and Cookie arrive at his school to find his classmates getting set up for the big graduation event. Cookie excitedly takes off and almost destroys the party by knocking over tables and spilling cupcakes and juice. Michael's class joins together to circle and catch Cookie, while their teacher praises them for their teamwork. Michael's classmates are a multicultural group with many obscure names: Ayanna, Nia, and Eigen, which may be difficult for early readers to sound out. Although it is not a common practice for many first graders to have such an elaborate graduation, I am sure beginning readers will enjoy the antics and togetherness this class shares on their special day. Part of the "Robin Hill School" series.
