Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
10/07/2013
In the latest from Asian specialist Tuttle in a series of Japanese books on sewing, with patterns translated into English and converted to American measurements, designer Yamada focuses on patterns for kids, with 20 designs for ages 2–8. There are several dresses for girls, a handful of pants, tops, and shorts for both sexes, and some dressy shirts for young men, all made of simple lines and presented on charming Japanese children modeling in linens and printed cottons. While a design such as the Shorts with Back Pockets seems perfect for a modern child, the sleeveless, frilled pinafore is one of the choices that has a pleasingly old-fashioned appeal to it. These designs are not for the short on time, or for beginning sewists. While patterns are provided, the makers will need to trace the correct sizes, add in a seam allowance (3/8 in. instead of the standard 5/8 in., for the most part) and then puzzle through the Japanese-style sewing instructions, which are big on pictures and skimpy on written guidelines. Still, patterns in this simple, pleasing style are hard to find, especially at this price point. Includes patterns and full-color photos. (Nov.)
