Overview

It is a good thing that mothers understand what no one else seems to when you are the youngest child and are finally four years old. Bonnie is more than ready to join her older sisters and brother in the many adventures she sees come their way, whether it be sliding along the ice, searching for arrowheads, or going on that journey of all journeys -- across the swinging bridge to School. Winter or summer, something is always happening in the Fairchild house tucked amidst the pine trees of the Kentucky hills. And, four-years-old or not, Bonnie usually manages to be in the middle of it!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Bonnie has looked forward to going to school for a very long time. She has seen all her older siblings go; now it is her turn. Everything from her brand-new dress to the hand-me-down books excites Bonnie before she even gets to school. Once she and her siblings go to the one-room schoolhouse taught by Miss Cora, the adventures begin. From adopting a large turtle as the school pet, to being trapped in the schoolhouse during a bad storm, Bonnie, her family, and the other students learn a lot about life, as well as lessons. While the stories in each chapter may lack conflict by today's standards, the book still paints an accurate picture of school and life in turn-of-the-century Kentucky. Merwin's charming illustrations add to the period-feel of these older but still entertaining stories. Fans of Laura Ingalls Wilders' "Little House" books, in particular, should check out this and other works by Caudill. 2004 (orig. 1949), Bethlehem Books, Ages 7 up.

and she loved it! I wish I had found this book when I was a kid. We can't wait to read the next 3 in the series.

I am so happy this book is back. It was one of my favorites as a child. My sister and I both loved. The story of a family and how life was long ago, simple and good. Very highly recommended!
