Happy New Year: Die Operettengala aus Dresden

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Blair Sanderson
While the Vienna Philharmonic famously ushers in the New Year with Strauss waltzes, the Dresden Staatskapelle celebrates in its own buoyant way with a concert of light music from the field of operetta, presented at Gottfried Semper's Dresden Opera. For the kickoff of 2013, Christian Thielemann leads the orchestra and the Dresden State Opera Choir in a lively program of vocal and choral numbers from the works of Emmerich Kálmán. A contemporary of Franz Lehár, Kálmán is remembered today as the composer of such "silver age" operettas as "Gräfin Mariza," which is generously excerpted here, as well as "Die Csárdásfürstin," "Die Zirkusprinzessin," "Kaiserin Josephine," "Die Herzogin von Chicago," and "Das Veilchen vom Montmartre," among others. This glittering Deutsche Grammophon showcase features soprano Ingeborg Schöpf and tenor Piotr Beczala as vocal soloists, whose romantic voices infuse the music with passion and charm, and together they create a wonderfully festive atmosphere with their duets. Packaged with the CD is a bonus DVD, "Live aus der Semperoper," which offers a program recorded in 2011 that features the singing of Angela Denoke, Ana-Maria Labin, and Piotr Beczala, and takes viewers into the Semperoper and the sights and sounds of this new Dresden tradition.
