Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debbie Levy
In this entry in the "Big Apple Barn" series, a pony named Happy Go Lucky gives his first rides as a school pony at the Big Apple Barn riding school. It's exciting and scary heading into the ring with Emily, a young rider, on his back, and Happy works hard to be a responsive and accommodating mount. What Happy really wants, though, is to be the pony of choice for Ivy, the youngest daughter of the riding school's manager. Ivy knows just where to scratch Happy behind his ear, and she gives him treats. The good news is that Ivy likes Happy, too, and wants to ride him for her lessons. But first both girl and pony must prove that they are ready for each other and that even though they are both beginners, they will be able to work well and safely together. With his friend Roscoe the barn mouse, Happy hatches a plan to convince Ivy's mother that he and Ivy make a good pair. When Happy and Ivy finally get their chance to prove themselves, however, the weather is stormy. Such conditions make Happy skittish. With rain pinging, wind shrieking, and thunder cracking, Happy finds it difficult to keep his composure, and he bolts with Ivy on his back. It seems as if the pony has ruined his chances with Ivy—or has he? The story is engaging and the language is straightforward. Earhart weaves in plenty of beginners' information about riding lessons and includes a glossary explaining the four different gaits of a pony. Younger horse-lovers are the audience for this tale, which is told from Happy's point of view; older horse-lovers may turn their noses up at the idea talking horses. Black-and-white illustrations nicely complement the story.
