Fueled by the big egos of their respective bosses, the major airlines fell into a financial abyss trying to serve the maximum number of passengers and destinations, only to face rising fuel, labor, and operating costs as well as rising debt-while Southwest Airlines became a model of success and profitability. Most books (and there are usually two or three new ones a year) on the airline industry treat it as a single entity, describing the effects of deregulation or strikes or fluctuating oil prices. Or else these books profile a specific airline, personifying it by its controversial or flamboyant owner or CEO. Petzinger, though, combines both approaches. He portrays the airline industry as a boy's club run by only a handful of egotistical, ambitious, and arrogant men. Petzinger, once a baggage handler for United Airlines and now "Wall Street Journal" reporter and editor, colorfully chronicles the changing alliances and enmities of these men as they battle to "win at any cost" and change the way the world travels.

    Great Start but repetitious

    I purchased this book due to my love of aviation and airlines in general and in all fairness this book is packed with a great deal of information on the inner workings of some of the biggest airlines with an emphasis on some of the even bigger personalities in charge of those airlines (i.e. Crandall, Lorenzo, etc.) However, after a little over halfway through the book I noticed a great deal of repetition and the author seemed to be going over previous chapter themes in an only slightly different light.

    Great book

    This was the greatest aviation themed book I HAVE EVER READ! Was very insightful and gave information on the history of the airline industry and why it is like it is today.

    Great Book

    Must read for anyone in business, especially aviation. Great background on how the airlines got started, the personalities behind the airlines, and what really goes on behind the scenes. Thank you, Mr. Petzinger, for writing such a magnificent book on such a great industry.
